Sparks in the night - picture.
So... The thing is... who we are? What we are? I would propose, that we are some kind of process. Such process has it's cause and has it's goal. And of course has its course-regulation mechanism, that allow to strive towards such goal.
Now... Our emotions are just regulatory signals. They are not to "consume", they are to "regulate" our behavior. You may say, that striving for "pleasure regulatory signals" will lead us towards such goal, but it is obviously false.
So... if a positive experience become a goal of its own, if we "look for happiness" or "pursue of happiness" we don't strive for our original goal, we do not follow our original "route" or path of behavior, and more effort we put in achieving happiness, more stressed, anxious, and really unhappy we are.
The question would be: Hey, but what is that... goal? What is that route? Well, there's no definitive answer for everyone, anywhere, anytime. But let first assume, that our goal is just simply biological - have family and have children. The question would be, does ppl who has family and children are more happy than those alone? And the answer is - Yes, they are.
Then, we are to work, but not doing senseless and fruitless tasks, but work hard on sensible and fruitful endeavor. Again we may ask or try to measure, who keeps better, those working hard in the mentioned way, or those who just do not work, do not get tired, who have free time and seeking more happiness. Surprisingly probably ppl working, getting tired, not to the exhaustion but still delivering hardship and effort, would be better in mental perspective than thous free seekers of happiness.
So returning to some natural activities and attitudes. Stopping pursuing happiness, checking day by day how happy we are. Start seeking for work that lead somewhere, that can bring some good to working person and others. And just do it, and do it, and get tired. Having family which means always, make some kind of sacrifice. Bring something to the world by your own effort.
We are to be "on track". When we are "on track" we know some things: 1- where we're going, 2 - goal is achievable 3- we are moving towards our goal.
Maybe there are deep inside us some mechanism that we cant be aware of, which seeks if we are "on track". And when we are not, these mechanism screaming into our heart, by very unpleasant emotions.
I would add tome religious reflection, but it's a long comment and ppl are a little bit sensitive, so maybe better not. Just... religion brings another kind of relationship to life and regardless all mistakes, misunderstandings, such relationship directed "beyond", might be natural too, and bring some positive to our life. Cause we are processes. We are part of Life, cocreating Life, moving, transcending, making things better and being in relationship(s). Happiness.. will appear, unexpected, unearned, just like a smile from Universe :)
