Rzadko zdarza się, aby "Newsweek" (oczywiście wydanie europejskie) w głównym materiale sięgał po autora z zewnątrz. John L. Allen, Jr. jest korespondentem "National Catholic Reporter" i w numerze z 25 kwietnia opublikował tekst na temat szybkiej beatyfikacji Jana Pawła II.
Dziennikarz zauważył, że za pontyfikatu Polaka wyniesiono na ołtarze więcej osób (1338 beatyfikowanych i 442 kanonizowanych) niż wcześniej zrobiło to 261 papieży w całej historii Kościoła. Maszynerię tę uruchomił w 1983 roku Jan Paweł II, poprzez zmniejszenie liczby wymaganych cudów, przyspieszenie procedur, odrzucenie instytucji "adwokata diabła" i innych. Dzięki temu światowy katolicyzm zyskał setki świętych usytuowanych bliżej wiernych i bardziej działających na ich wyobraźnię. Jan Paweł II zostanie rekordzistą. Znajdzie się bowiem na szczycie tej piramidy z wynikiem szybszym o 15 dni od Matki Teresy.
Powyższe uwagi napisane są bez złości, ale z troską o jakość współczesnego Kościoła. Zresztą dziwne jest, że w Polsce, przed 1 maja, poza ckliwymi wspominkami, niewiele można przeczytać o wpływie Jego pontyfikatu na wizerunek Kościoła.
Tej chwalebnej jak i ciemnej strony.
PS. Beatyfikację świętować będzie też Bruksela. W przygotowania włączyli się polscy dyplomaci, korzystając z serwera msz.gov.pl. Już 13 kwietnia, Pani Iwona Wojtczak, wysoka funkcjonariuszka polskiego przedstawicielstwa przy Unii Europejskiej, rozesłała maila informującego o mszach i koncertach poświęconych majowym uroczystościom. Pani Wojtczak w ambasadzie odpowiada za promocję, ale nie mam pewności, czy takie maile wchodzą w zakres jej obowiązków.
PPS. Jak również wiadomo, do Centrum Opatrzności Bożej, każdy może wysłać SMS-a zgłoszeniowego (za 2 złote plus VAT), a następnie swoje zdjęcie. W ten sposób z tysięcy obrazków powstanie wielki portret polskiego papieża. Nie byłoby w tym nic dziwnego, poza tym, że wszystkie opłaty zasilą kościelną fundację. Wszyscy operatorzy telekomunikacyjni, którym płacimy rachunki, wspaniałomyślnie zrzekli się z tej okazji należnych im prowizji.

The thoughts about the upcoming beatification
It doesn’t happen often for “Newsweek” (European edition of course) to use an outside journalist in its main piece. John L. Allen Jr. is a correspondent for “National Catholic Reporter” and in the issue of the magazine from 25 April, he published an article about the quick process of beatification of John Paul II.
The journalist noticed that during the pope’s pontificate there were more voted to be holy (1338 people who were pronounced blessed, 442 canonized) than ever before, even with the actions of all 261 popes in the history combined. This whole complex system was put in motion by the pope John Paul II in 1983, when he decreased the number of miracles required, quickened the procedures, rejected the institution of “devil’s advocate” and some more. Thanks to that, the Catholic world gained more saints who were closely situated to the common life and therefore more approachable to admire. John Paul II will hold a record in this field of becoming a saint – he’ll beat Mother Teresa by 15 days.
The above observations are not meant to be mean, but are supposed to express the concern about the current quality of the modern Catholic Church as an institution. It is quite weird that in Poland, before May 1, there isn’t much to be read about the pope’s influence on the current state of church.
That is concerning both the dark and bright side of the influence.
PS. Brussels will also celebrate the upcoming beatification. The Polish diplomats are also taking part in the preparations using the msz.gov.pl server (an official government domain). Iwona Wojtczak, a high member of the Polish representative in the European Union, sent out an e-mail informing about the masses and concerts in honor of the beatification. That occurred as early as April 13. Ms Wojtczak is working for the embassy as a P.R. person, but I’m not sure sending out such e-mails is a part of her duties.
PPS. As it is commonly known, the Center of God’s Providence is accepting text messages (for 2 zloty plus tax) which has to include the person’s photo. This is meant to create a giant portrait of the Polish pope. There would be nothing weird about it, if it wasn’t for the fact that all the proceedings from this will benefit a church-related organization. All the mobile providers in Poland agreed to drop their share in this case.
