Jak wiadomo, siedzibą Parlamentu Europejskiego jest Strasburg (stolica Alzacji) i ten tydzień spędzam właśnie w tym mieście. Śledząc krajową debatę na temat Śląska, narodowości i autonomii, przychodzi mi na myśl następująca refleksja.
W ciągu ostatnich 350 lat Alzacja pięciokrotnie "zmieniała właściciela". Francja i Niemcy traktowały ją jako pierwszy łup po zwycięskiej wojnie. Językami urzędowymi są tu francuski i niemiecki, ale znaczna część ludności posługuje się alzackim (czyli mieszaniną dwóch pierwszych). Francuski jest używany wszędzie i powszechnie, ale nigdy nie mam problemu, aby porozumieć się po niemiecku.
Nikt we Francji nie wyzywa Alzatczyków od Niemców, ale też nikt w Alzacji nie myśli o odłączeniu tego rejonu od Francji. Dziwne to wszystko. No, ale Strasburg to nie Katowice, a Paryż nie Warszawa. Nie ma też prezesa. I tu jest pies pogrzebany.

Autonomous thoughts from Rhine
As it is commonly known, Strasbourg (capital city of Alsace) is the European Parliament’s legal residence, so this week that’s where I spend my time. While keeping track of our national discussion regarding autonomy of Silesia, I get the following reflection in mind.
During last 350 years Alsace had “changed owners” five times. France and Germany treated it like a trophy after winning a war. Official languages are French and German, but the majority of inhabitants use Alsatian (a mix of those two). French is widely used but there is never a problem for me to use German any time I need to.
Nobody in France calls the Alsatians Germans, but also nobody in Alsace wants to disconnect this region from France. All in all, it seems odd. Well, but Strasbourg is not Katowice, and Paris is no Warsaw. There’s also no chairman Kaczyński. And that seems to be the main difference.
