W czasie wczorajszego posiedzenia Delegacji do Komisji Współpracy Parlament Europejski – Ukraina, tak sobie, znienacka, odwiedził nas minister spraw zagranicznych Szwecji Carl Bildt. Piszę "tak sobie", bo nie jest to ani reguła, ani obowiązek.
Bildt zrobił dużo dla budowy polityki wschodniej Unii Europejskiej i ciągle trzyma rękę na pulsie. Jest wiarygodny, bo reprezentuje kraj bogaty, który w dodatku nie graniczy z żadnym partnerem na Wschodzie. Bildt przyszedł z prostym komunikatem: "Pamiętajcie – mówił do obecnych na sali Ukraińców i członków PE – że napięcia w Afryce Północnej nie odwrócą naszej uwagi od Wschodu. Wręcz przeciwnie, polityka sąsiedztwa na Wschodzie pokazuje, że konsekwentne i wsparte pieniędzmi działania, potrafią skutecznie wspomóc demokrację". Na pewno miał na myśli Ukrainę, Mołdawię i Gruzję. Co do pozostałych krajów – jest gorzej, ale lepiej niż na północy Afryki.
No i w takiej atmosferze rozpoczęliśmy obrady. Z mocnym impulsem optymizmu.

A visit out of the blue
In the course of yesterday’s session of the European Parliament Delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, out of the blue there appeared the Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Bildt. I’m saying "out of the blue" because such visits are neither a rule, nor a duty.
Carl Bildt has contributed a lot to the development of the EU eastern policy and continues to keep his finger on the pulse. He has a lot of credibility since he represents a rich country and one which shares no borders with any partner in the East. Mr Bildt came with a simple message: ‘Remember,’ he said to the Ukrainians and MEPs gathered in the meeting room, ‘that the tensions in North Africa are not going to turn our attention away from the East. On the contrary, the East neighbourhood policy demonstrates that consistent actions coupled with financial backing are highly effective at supporting democracy.’ He must have meant Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. The other countries fare much worse, though luckily not as badly as North Africa.
So it was on this note that we opened the debate. With a great deal of optimism.
